Always follow OSHA electrical lockout/tagout principles before opening condenser access panels. Capacitors store lethal voltage even with power disconnected.
Locate the outdoor disconnect box mounted on the wall adjacent to your condenser. Pull the handle or remove the pullout block entirely. Switch off the dedicated double-pole AC breaker in your main electrical panel.
Using an insulated screwdriver (holding ONLY the rubberized handle), short the metal shaft between the HERM terminal and COMMON, then between FAN and COMMON to release any residual microfarad charge.
Photograph the wiring first. Transfer wires one-by-one to your replacement capacitor:• HERM (3 prongs): Compressor lead
• FAN (2 prongs): Fan motor lead
• COMMON (4 prongs): Line voltage & contactor lead
Examine the contactor copper points for black carbon pitting or welded contacts. Inspect the plastic housing for dead ants (attracted to 24V magnetic fields). If points are pitted or scored, replace the contactor simultaneously.
